Hermida For DH?

For those of you who don't know about Red Sox bench/4th outfielder/soon to start/ player, Jeremy Hermida, here's a history lesson on him:

Straight out of high school, Hermida was a first round draft pick (11th overall) in 2002. He eventually made his way up to the big leagues in 2005. Expectations were high, and why wouldn't they be? This is like the current Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals, when he's called up to the Majors he'll be expected to shine on the mound. Hermida's first Major League at bat was a pinch hit grand slam. Pretty crazy, right. Never been done before, except for one person (Bill Duggleby).
Unfortunately, that was his only prime moment in a Marlins uniform. From then on, he was an average outfielder who would bat 6th or 7th in the Marlins lineup. He never lived up to expectations. His best year so far was in 2007, 18 HRs and 63 RBI's. Pretty much a season stat JD Drew will put up. And JD Drew, is nothing spectacular, offensively. The Marlins realized they wouldn't need Hermida's presence in the lineup or on the field, so this past November he was traded to the Boston Red Sox for Hunter Jones (terrible reliever for us) and Jose Alvarez.
When I heard about the trade, I looked at this guy like nothing but a backup outfielder for the Sox, and an upgrade from injury plagued Rocco Baldelli..but so far this season, I've been proven wrong.

First off let's talk about some David Ortiz. It's about two weeks into the season, and David Ortiz isn't hitting up to potential, 3-22, 12 strikeouts. It's looking like this is going to be last year all over again. Hermida, on the other hand, is 4-10 with a homerun and 3 RBI's. He actually hit a bases clearing double today to drive in some insurance runs for John Lackey (they later beat the Twins 6-3). I know I could potentially read back on these blogs and tell myself I'm crazy for thinking it, but how about let's try out Hermida at the DH spot. This kid is 26 years old, and all he could need is a change of location. He's obviously got the talent. You could see the drive not being there when playing in Dolphins Stadium where the fan attendance could fill up a classroom. And where fans look at baseball, how Boston currently looks at hockey. Point being made, fans in Florida didn't give two. I feel Hermida has a drive playing in Boston. It's a completely different league. I could see him possibly having a breakout year for the Sox. Or at least someone has to.
I'm not saying completely give up on Big Papi. Just let him sit on the bench and have some girl talk with Mike Lowell about how Boston doesn't give any chances. At least Ellsbury's injury can help test out the "Hermida For DH" experiment. I'll tell you, if he keeps knocking away with these numbers, David's time could possibly play DB..Designated Bencher. Time will tell.

But you know how this city is. When we're struggling and other teams are winning, we hit the panic button. I'd like to say chill out and back off from Ortiz, but he needs to realize that his at bats are going to be examined by a microscope. When he gets his chances from now on to hit, he needs to show this club that he can do his only job he's responsible for..hitting.

Other than that, you can get this petition started. Hermida For DH!
